Why Do Kilts Vary So Much In Price?

Kilts vary in price depending on the tartan, weight and your personal measurements. As mentioned, a standard kilt is made up of 8 yards, and should at least come in a light weight (11.5 oz fabric), a medium weight (about 13 oz fabric) and a heavy weight (about 16 oz fabric.). Now don't confuse the modern kilt with the more traditional look of the Great Kilt, also called the Feileadh Mor, Breacan Feile, Big Kilt, Belted Plaid. The Great Kilt is a double width tartan that must be pleated by hand each time you wear it.

The modern kilts pictured on this page do not need to be hand pleated.

The Scottish Kilt pictured here is an 8-yard, 16oz Wool kilt, pleated to flag, and it runs about $367. When looking for deals on Scottish Kilts, remember that most of these are specially made and some even custom made, so be careful on what someone tells you is a "bargain." You truly get what you pay for when it comes to kilts.

Pleating to the stripe

The fabric can be folded in such a way as to display a certain pattern. When the pleating of a kilt is folded so a particular vertical strip of the tartan pattern is seletced, the pleats are arranged so that this pattern runs down the center of the pleat. It is also called military pleating because most military regiments use this style. See the photo below.

When the fabric is folded in such a way as to display a full sett of the tartan pattern, which is taken up in each pleat, it results in a reproduction of the pattern across the back of the kilt. See the photo below.

So how will I konw which is a good Scottish Kilt?

Now that you know some of the basics, let's put them together so you can shop inteligently.

An average Kilt will be 8 yards of fabric, probably in the 12-13 oz weight of fabric and pleated to the sett.

If the kilt has more fabric (9 yards or more), or if the fabric is of a heavier weight (13 to 16 ounces or higher) then the cost will be higher.

Also, some kilt makers charge additional for pleating to the strip or other custom pleating.

Now you're thinking, just what is the best deal?

There are two considerations when shopping for the best deal on a kilt. If this is your first kilt and you do not have any of the kilt accessories, than a kilt package is definately the way to go. If you already own all of the kilt accessories, they you can shop just for your kilt, and you can even look for your clan's tartan.

Kilt Packages

There are as many different kilt packages as there are kilt makers. However, the kilt packages generally come in two distint types: one kilt package is usually more formal and includes a formal jacket. Other kilt packages or more casual and do not include the jacket.
